Mary Kelly
Among the most influential feminist artists working today, Mary Kelly first came to prominence in 1976 with her epic series, Post Partum Document. This work, exploring the artist's relationship with her infant over the course of six years through a combination of texts, images and found objects, was to prove pivotal not only to the development of Conceptual Art, but also to twentieth-century feminism. Kelly often deploys prevailing literary or scientific genres, ranging from romantic fiction to types of psychoanalytical and medical diagnosis which define woman as 'other'. Her richly textured narratives and images have received international attention for over twenty years and were the subject of a major US museum tour in 1997-8.
