Elogio dell'Occidente: Molti ritengono, dentro e fuori i suoi confini, che l'Occidente sia la fonte di tutti i mali, e l'accusa appare fondata se si considera il devastante impatto planetario di invenzioni tutte occidentali come il capitalismo o il colonialismo. Ma allora come spiegare questo «desiderio di Occidente» che alimenta imponenti flussi migratori? Opportunità economiche a parte, qui c'è anche la volontà di accedere a una specifica geografia culturale e umana che si è costituita nei secoli come una «eccezione». Eccezione imperfetta, certo, eppure capace di garantire, attraverso rotture rivoluzionarie intrinseche al paradigma occidentale, conquiste come il riconoscimento dell'individuo, il diritto al dissenso individuale e collettivo, l'idea che si possa e si debba lottare contro un potere iniquo... Anche questo è Occidente, e oggi il suo stato di eccezione viene paradossalmente colto più da uno sguardo esterno che da uno interno. E invece è proprio per mantenere e ampliare questa costellazione imperfetta che dobbiamo batterci. A meno che non si voglia far prevalere un senso masochistico della propria collocazione nel mondo e un esotismo oggi del tutto fuori luogo.
